Learning vocabulary is far from being the whole of language learning, but it is a significant and necessary task. Many students struggle with learning vocabulary, and do so because they have not found effective strategies. Different people learn best in different ways – you need to experiment to find the strategies that work well for you.
Below are four broad recommendations for vocabulary learning, and then a collection of specific strategies that will hopefully help you. As we progress throughout this trimester, we will have some Spanish-only days. I will only speak in Spanish, and I will expect that you will try your best to only speak in Spanish too. If I see that you are trying your best and are not intentionally speaking in English, you will earn a 10/10 for the day. If I hear you speaking some English intentionally, an 8/10 is earned. If I hear a lot of English from you during the class period or I can tell that you are not even trying to speak Spanish, a 6/10 is earned. The goal of the Spanish-only days is to provide an environment for you to listen, speak, and think in Spanish. That is why it is so important that you try to keep the entire day in Spanish and not revert to English when conversation gets tough. You'll be given a list of helpful phrases on day 1 to help you out, and there is even a phrase that asks for permission to express yourself in English for a moment if needed. :) We will start with just 1 "Día de español" each week but by the end of the school year, our goal will be to have 3 Spanish-only days each week. I am looking forward to these "Días de Español" with you! Welcome to Spanish 1B!
Spanish 1B is the second part of Spanish 1. Please take your grade seriously, and ask for help right away when needed. My goal is your success, but that will take responsibility and effort on your part as well. Please contact me if you have any questions, concerns, comments, or conversations about Spanish. Together we can make this a successful trimester! Class updates, study guides, quizlet flashcards, YouTube Videos, and practice activities online can all be found on this page. I'm hoping you visit here often as you study. The class expectations and curriculum have been shared with you in class on the syllabus. Absent? Lose a paper? No worries! Pick up another copy in the "Copias Extras" green tray at school, or print off whatever you need from Class Documents. Easy! Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm looking forward to a great trimester with you! ~ Señora Goorhouse |
