El día de los muertos is a two day celebration that involves the whole family. It is a way to celebrate and remember those who have died. In honor of the dead, families create altars in their homes or by the graves. These altars are created with things that remind the family of those who have passed. Pictures, a favorite food, and favorite clothes may be included. The marigold flower is also a symbolic part of the altars.
All altars also have the four elements in some form. These four elements are earth, wind, fire, and water.
The earth is represented through bread which is made just for this celebration and is called "pan de muertos" or bread of the dead.

The wind is seen when the papel picado, or cut paper, blow gently.
